"Dans le legs naturaliste des Lumières, François-Emmanuel Fodéré (1764-1835) incarne la figure du « précurseur » de la médecine légale moderne. Ce livre est le premier à lui être dédié. Il cadre le « moment Fodéré » où la médecine légale se certifie comme science des maux de la société. « Faire parler les corps » évoque Fodéré en sa formation, ses saillies épistémologiques et sa réception notamment italienne. Parmi une vaste production livresque, son projet ressort de sa somme médico-légale : "Les Lois éclairées par les sciences physiques, ou Traité de médecine légale et d'hygiène publique" (Paris, an VII) ; "Traité de médecine légale et d'hygiène publique ou de police de santé : adapté aux codes de l'Empire français et aux connaissances actuelles" (Paris, 1813). Le savant prône l'alliance du droit et de la médecine, la salubrité sociale et la régulation étatique. Il dénigre les savoirs disséminés sous l'Ancien Régime pour un savoir médico-légal comme science positive. Elle greffera la modernité institutionnelle au positivisme pénal, au progrès scientifique, à la laïcisation des sociétés. Pour « toutes les classes sans exception de privilèges », elle escorte la gouvernance de l'État libéral. Suicide, crime, infanticide, folie, épidémie, hygiène publique : ces objets mènent Fodéré à la science investigatrice de l'anomie sociale pour en prévenir la causalité. Surveiller et guérir : tel est son credo positiviste !"
